It was brought to my attention that some of you enjoyed my Market Week post about what I did that week at my internship. SO..... I decided to record a small summary for every day this past week to show you guys how a typical week goes for me!
Monday—August 31st
8am-6:30pm
My main supervisor was out this past week on vacation, but today was the day she returned. Because she was back, I had a lot more work to do. Today, my major tasks were: pull, tag, and log samples to send to Macy’s, possibly pick up our samples we sent to Lord and Taylor, tag Dress Barn samples, check with a woman in production about 2 missing advertising and marketing samples for JCP, take pictures and record style numbers for our sales rep in Ohio, pull K&G TOP samples, and any other tasks the sales team threw in along the way. With so many different things going on with different accounts, I carry around my notebook in order for me to keep everything straight. This internship has really reinforced how important organization and proper time management is in a high-speed diverse setting. I always have the help of the other sales intern when getting these tasks done and together, we prove to move sufficiently. Today was a pretty busy day, which made it fly by—thankfully!
Tuesday—September 1st
8am-6pm
During my day today, I did some things similarly to what I did yesterday, but also some new tasks. First, my supervisor’s assistant received JCP PP, TOP, and MKT/AD samples—meaning that those samples were priority. Every time we get anything from JCP, it is priority and is to be done immediately because they are our biggest account. With that said, the other intern and I were given the JCP samples to tag, log, bag, and send out. Once that was completed, I was called to one of our showrooms to assist my supervisor with pulling certain samples for her meeting with TKMaxx. Sometimes during her meetings, the buyers will ask me to try the clothing on—which is always fun! After helping my supervisor, I returned to my desk to begin the new project of forming spreadsheets containing pictures, style numbers, colors, and descriptions of each item. The items that were going on the spreadsheet were sent to me via email, which is typically the way we communicate around the office from the 3 different departments. After completing the spreadsheet, I forwarded it to the sales assistant and was called into another meeting but this one was with Town Shoes. During this meeting, my job was to take a picture of every style the buyers pulled from the showroom and record it’s style number and color. Once all of the pictures were taken and I downloaded them into their own file, it was time to begin prepping to leave work. Every Tuesday and Thursday, I am in charge of taking out the trash in all 6 sales team member’s rooms. Once I took out the trash, I had to restock the kitchen with snacks and pop and then I was done. Turning off every light as I left, I completed my Tuesday!
Wednesday—September 2nd
8am-5:30pm
My day today was mostly spent all over the office. I had Charming Charlie PP samples and JCP TOP and MKT/AD samples to get out by the end of the day, cold weather samples to pull for Annie Sez, Winners, and Lord and Taylor samples to deliver and pickup, and also some smaller tasks thrown into the mix. My supervisor left for Dallas, Texas today for a meeting with the JCP buyer. This being said, all tasks for her were priority (although they already always are). The other intern and I had to pack her suitcases with samples from our showrooms and record what all she was taking so we knew where each sample was if it went “missing”. We also had to create return labels for the suitcases we packed for her because she did not want to lug the suitcases back to Ohio once completing her meeting in Texas. So, we made return labels for both suitcases to be shipped UPS overnight back to our NYC office. After sending her on her way, I was called to assist in a meeting with New York and Company. During this meeting I did the usual—record each style they pulled along with the color, photograph it, then put it back in it’s original home in the showroom. After the meeting was over and I was through with my tasks, I turned to the computer to label and organize the pictures I had just taken. Once all tasks for NY & Co were complete, I made PP (pre-production) tags for Charming Charlie and MKT/AD (marketing/advertising) tags for JCP. Tagged, logged, and shipped; that task was finished. After all in-house tasks were complete, we were instructed to run our August Market samples to Winners and also pick up our August Market samples we had previously walked to Lord and Taylor. As soon as I stepped foot in the office after being gone for maybe 20mins, I was BOMBARDED by 3 people, "**** needs pictures ASAP!! Hurry and check your emails!!!" (*** indicating my supervisor). Running to my computer, I saw 10 minutes ago that she had emailed me asking me to take a picture of a sample in our showroom and to forward it to her in the email thread. Running around like a crazy, I took the picture, downloaded it, editing it by adding the style number and color, then forwarded it to her. I can't decide if it's a good thing or bad thing that my supervisor counts on me so much and turns to me ASAP when she needs things done but BOY was my blood pressure high trying to get that task done quickly LOL. Today was a very busy day, but it also made for a quick workday!
Thursday—September 3rd
8am-6pm
Today I began my day by cleaning all of the showrooms and by cleaning, I mean putting everything away that was misplaced. For almost two weeks now there has been this random cardboard box with last season’s cold weather samples in it and no one claims to know where it came from. Well, per my supervisor’s orders, I had to find the culprit that left that abandoned, old, beat up box in my nice and clean showroom. Turned out, the box belonged to a sales rep that was out of the office this week so I snuck the box back into his office and I am praying he won’t notice that I returned his clutter. After my detective work was done, I then laid out August Market samples for Macy’s that were due to be sent today. Once my supervisor looked them over, making sure the tags included the style numbers and seeing that the colors were correct, I boxed up the samples and sent them out. Returning to a massive amount of emails, I found that our Ohio sales rep had emailed me asking me to find the fabrications and dimensions for certain styles she had listed. I have been asked to do this for multiple sales reps because when they send spreadsheets of the merchandise the buyers chose to the buyers, most companies like to know all they can about the product and some of the fabrications and dimensions (to my luck), tend to be missing from some of their fact sheets. So with my mission in mind, I set off to production to ask for their Steve Madden and Betsey Johnson CW 15’ fact books. Once finding the fabrications and dimensions, I then sent them back to the Ohio sales rep and found it was time to begin my “end of day” rituals. Being Thursday, it was my second time to take the trash out for the sales team area and I accomplished that in one big swoop through the office. Checking the kitchen to ensure it had been restocked with snacks and pop, I ran out the office, turning off every light on my way—finally out at 6pm instead of 6:30-7pm!
Friday—September 4th
8am-3pm
Today was actually a pretty easy workday because with it being a holiday weekend, the office closed at 3pm today! Most of my day was spent organizing the intern desk because I’m positive it hasn’t been organized or sorted through for over 1 year. After I recycled countless stacks of useless papers, I ventured out from my office to begin to pull August Market samples for TKMaxx. After I pulled the samples, tagged them and logged them, I set them out on the showroom table for my supervisor to check them over first thing Tuesday morning so I can then walk them to the TKMaxx office. After that, I received an email from my supervisor saying that one of her suitcases had not made its way back from Dallas (we sent her off to Dallas Wednesday and she was back Thursday). The suitcases were supposed to be sent overnight Wednesday night and arrive in our NYC office Thursday morning. This being said, it was my job to try and find out where this missing suitcase had gone! With the help from the receptionist, she found that the package was supposedly not scanned when it entered the UPS truck. We are hoping the package will arrive Tuesday morning but by the time she finished speaking with the UPS customer service, it was 3pm and it was time for my 3-day weekend!
As always, comments are very appreciated! I've also added a lot of pics to my VSCO so be sure to take a peak at those ;-)
Have an awesome Labor Day Weekend!
