After about 1 month in the city I had bad quite a few friends from work but I was still found myself bored, and eager to do more with my little spare time. I have met quite a few people around the city who are either from Ohio or have lived in Ohio for a small period of time before moving into the city—I was just as shocked as you all. On 9/11, a Friday, I got off of work, went to the gym and then came home for the night with the intentions to go straight to bed. After I showered and lay in my bed for a while, I decided I should go to the roof of my building and check out the light beam shining from the Freedom Tower for 9/11. It was late, around 9pm, but I decided to go up anyway because I knew it would be a spectacular sight to see while I was here in NYC to witness it first hand. I threw on my OU t-shirt, some leggings, and my Birkenstocks and headed up from the 9th floor. As I imagined, the beaming light was an awesome sight to experience first hand. Shining from the top of the Freedom Tower clear into the cloudy night sky, I’m sure it was clearly visible in all areas within NYC.
After taking a couple of pictures I heard a girl say, “excuse me, do you go to OU?” Assuming she was talking to me because of my OU t-shirt, I turned around and saw two girls, my age, sitting at a table behind me drinking wine. Normally whenever someone asks if I go to OU, my response is always yes and then they continue to tell me about a family member or close friend who also goes to OU. But this time after my reply “yes”, they both replied, “we both go to OU too!!??” Shocked and thrilled, “no way?! What year are you guys? What are you doing here?” spewed out of my mouth before I could even comprehend that I just met two fellow bobcats! They both told me how they had just moved to the Webster (where I live) a couple of weeks ago and both interning in the city, one for 60 minutes and the other for The Today Show. They invited me to sit and we talked for about 30 minutes before they brought up that there was another OU member to their group and that she was on her way back to the Webster from her internship at Cosmopolitan Magazine! Once she arrived, we all spilled our individual backgrounds, talked about OU, things we wanted to do in the city, and before I knew it, we had been sitting on the roof for 2 hours and it was beginning to get chilly! Before heading in for the night we all made sure to get everyone’s phone number because we had made plans to grab breakfast all together in the morning and talk about what fun and exciting activities we should do for the day!
Meeting 3 other OU students in the city was pretty crazy but I am so glad I met them! OU thrives off of being a Bobcat family and I am so glad I get to be apart of this forever family. With all of these OU interns in the city, it also shows how successful OU is with connecting their students to potential jobs/internships! With just us 4 girls we have interns for HUGE companies like CBS’s 60 Minutes, The Today Show, Cosmopolitan Magazine, Steve Madden, and probably many more! I am forever blessed from my decision to go to OU!!! OU OH YEAH!
